Proverbs 29:1

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 1 (1844 - 1868)

I saw that if Brother Barr had understood his duty, he would have checked this spirit at once. But he was not standing in the counsel of the Lord. I was pointed to the work in Connecticut. O, what a work! The brethren Graham were led by a wrong spirit. Those burdens and exercises they had were not of the Lord. They were in a deception. Brother Barr encouraged this, and by his words created a fearful excitement when Sister Lyman was set aside by one of these burdens. Brother Barr said, “‘He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.’ [Proverbs 29:1.] Who goes next? There may be hope today; tomorrow it is gone.”

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 3 (1876 - 1882)

3LtMs, Lt 55, 1876, par. 1

[First eight pages are missing.] I fear and sorrow lest I shall be compelled to expose your sinful course. I cannot see the cause of God imperiled by your corrupt doings. You cannot serve Jesus at one moment and Satan the next. I have waited patiently for you to have the spirit of confession. You have led out in nothing. You have made some acknowledgments in general terms, but specified nothing. When your wrongs have been reproved you have admitted you were wrong, that is all. Matters have been set before you which you dared not deny, and you admitted it was so. This was no confession on your part. There are definite acts and actual sins for you to confess. God has been waiting for you to confess these wrongs and defiling sins, but you have not done this. You have tried to appease your conscience without making thorough confessions, and you have fallen again and again under temptation, and you have no strength to withstand temptation. You have hardened your heart. “He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” Proverbs 29:1. I have seen actual occurrences. I have heard words you have uttered to girls and women. But I will not confess, for you to merely admit these things. I want you to lead out and make confessions yourself.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Lt 71, 1894

9LtMs, Lt 71, 1894, par. 9

How slow were some to yield up their selfishness in the matter of wages, even after clear and definite light had been given on this subject. <Never before had there been such a delay to correct their wrong course of action.> Unholy ambition took possession of their thoughts and minds, and not having experience—as it is evident they did not have—in the workings and methods of God, they would not receive the light given them by God. Since the light was given, a long period of time has passed, time sufficient for them to make decided changes; but instead of doing this, they were continually seeking occasion to justify themselves in retaining the money they had received. They showed themselves to be untrustworthy, and they could not be left to put their mold upon the cause of God. All their excuses and subterfuges could not avail with God. The Lord has given light which they chose not to heed. “He that being often reproved, hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” [Proverbs 29:1.]

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

Lt 209, 1902

17LtMs, Lt 209, 1902, par. 11

Let us not forget that God is in earnest with us. “Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily; therefore the hearts of the sons of men are fully set in them to do evil.” [Ecclesiastes 8:11.] But God will not always keep silence. “He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” [Proverbs 29:1.] The Lord will be true to His Word.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Lt 301, 1903

18LtMs, Lt 301, 1903, par. 5

I am now to lift the note of warning and give the trumpet a certain sound. Wake up, brethren; wake up from your peace and safety attitude and seek the Lord while He may be found; call ye upon Him while He is now nigh, in every church, with fasting, with confession and true repentance of heart. I am instructed to say that those who, “being often reproved,” hardeneth their hearts, “shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy,” meaning that there will be no chance for repentance, no chance to redeem the past. [Proverbs 29:1.] They are passed beyond the time, and the word is given, “Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.” Hosea 4:17.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Lt 101, 1904

19LtMs, Lt 101, 1904, par. 24

We are living in the great day of atonement. Shall we as a church heed the counsel of Christ, or shall we stand in our <own> light, and refuse to humble our hearts before God? Our only hope of salvation is to repent, while it is called today. “He that being often reproved hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” [Proverbs 29:1.] There is peril in delay.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

Lt 346, 1906

21LtMs, Lt 346, 1906, par. 6

Many warnings have been sent to Dr. Kellogg, but he has refused to receive those that were not in harmony with his own mind. Of him the words might be spoken, “He that being often reproved, hardeneth his neck, shall suddenly be destroyed, and that without remedy.” [Proverbs 29:1.] Had he received the reproofs and the warnings that the Lord has mercifully given him, he would have humbled his heart before God. He would have been reconverted and would today stand as the Lord’s chosen physician. But he seems to have made it his choice to cling to the scientific theories regarding which he has for so long time made a study. Our people cannot safely unite with him. Those who have been under his influence have lost their spiritual discernment.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Lt 104, 1911

25LtMs, Lt 104, 1911, par. 23

Proverbs 29:1-27

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

Lt 21, 1894

9LtMs, Lt 21, 1894, par. 9

O, how can God bear with the misdeeds of those who have had great light and advantages, and yet follow the course of their own choosing, to their eternal harm? Solomon, who had solemnly charged the people at the dedication of the temple, “Let your heart be perfect with the Lord your God” [1 Kings 8:61], chose his own way, and in his own heart separated from God. The mind that was once given to God and inspired of God to write the most precious words of wisdom (the book of Proverbs)—truths which are immortalized—that noble mind, through evil associations and yielding to temptations, became inefficient, weak in moral power, and Solomon dishonored himself, dishonored Israel, and dishonored his God.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Ms 40, 1898

13LtMs, Ms 40, 1898, par. 15

Solomon wrote the book of Proverbs, but after a time his wisdom became mingled with chaff. When came the chaff? After a manhood of such glorious promise, a change came in Solomon’s history. He did not continue true to his purity and allegiance to God. He broke through the barriers which God had erected to preserve His people from idolatry. The Lord had singled out Israel as a nation, making them the depositaries of sacred truth, to be given to the world. But Solomon cherished pride of political powers. He encouraged alliances with pagan kingdoms. He procured the silver of Tarshish and the gold of Ophir, but it was at the expense of destroying sacred trusts. Evil communications corrupted good manners. One false movement led to an acquaintance with idolaters. He formed marriage alliances with the daughters of pagan worshipers, and his wives led him away from God. His separation from God through communication with idolaters ruined him.

Proverbs 29:15

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 4 (1883 - 1886)

Ms 3, 1884

4LtMs, Ms 3, 1884, par. 10

Letting children grow up undisciplined is like letting soil lie uncultivated. The devil will be at work while you are idle. Children left that way are never happy. “A child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.” Proverbs 29:15. One undisciplined child will ruin hundreds of others. And who is responsible for all this mischief but the mother who first let the child have his own way? God has given us precepts and truths, line upon line, and we must take them and apply them to our children. Parents should first educate themselves properly and then their children.

The very last deception of Satan will be to make of none effect the testimony of the Spirit of God. “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). Satan will work ingeniously, in different ways and through different agencies, to unsettle the confidence of God’s remnant people in the true testimony.—Selected Messages 1:48 (1890).

3LtMs, Lt 33, 1882, par. 6

The time will come that the people will see this in its true bearing, but it will be too late to undo the past. They charge upon the ministers the loss of their souls and these ministers are among us today. These men are exalting their own ideas and plans above the light God has given them. These men allow self to come in between them and the people and to shut out heaven’s rays of light given to the people. “Where there is no vision, the people perish.” [Proverbs 29:18].

He will bring in spurious visions to mislead and mingle the false with the true, and so disgust people that they will regard everything that bears the name of visions, as a species of fanaticism; but honest souls, by contrasting false and true, will be enabled to distinguish between them.

Hasty, Impatient Speech—In the use of language there is perhaps no error that old and young are more ready to pass over lightly in themselves than hasty, impatient speech. They think it a sufficient excuse to plead, “I was off my guard, and did not really mean what I said.” But God’s Word does not treat it lightly. The Scripture says: “Seest thou a man that is hasty in his words? there is more hope of a fool than of him.” Proverbs 29:20. “He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.” Proverbs 25:28.
