Isaiah 48:1-8

“I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners. I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him that is afar off, and to him that is near, saith the Lord, and I will heal him. But the wicked are like the troubled sea, when it cannot rest, whose waters cast up mire and dirt. There is no peace, saith my God, to the wicked.” [Verses 18-21.] “Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth out of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness.” “Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened: for I knew that thou wouldst deal very treacherously, and wast called a transgressor from the womb.” [Isaiah 48:1, 8.] “Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people; for all the earth is mine: and ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation.” [Exodus 19:5, 6.]

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.

The forty-eighth chapter of Isaiah is an illustration of the experience of the publishing institutions. “Hearken unto me, O Jacob and Israel, my called; I am he; I am the first, I also am the last. ... I, even I, have spoken; yea, I have called him; I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous. Come ye near unto me, hear ye this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord God, and his Spirit hath sent me. Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadest thee by the way that thou shouldest go. O that thou hadst hearkened unto my commandments! Then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.” [Verses 12, 15-18.]

The forty-eighth chapter of Isaiah contains much for us to consider. It is necessary that we study it carefully, and especially verses nine to eleven: “For my name’s sake I will defer mine anger, and for my praise I will refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. Behold, I have refined thee, but not with silver; I have chosen thee in the furnace of affliction. For mine own sake, even for mine own sake, will I do it; for how should my name be polluted. And I will not give my glory to another. ... Come ye near unto me; hear ye this: I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I; and now the Lord God, and his Spirit, hath sent me. Thus saith the Lord, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: I am the Lord thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go. O, that thou hadst harkened to my commandments! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea.” [Verses 9-11, 16-18.]

I am to warn our people, Give the enemies no opportunity to be furnished by you with questioning doubts of the work the Lord is doing through the testimonies. God has not laid on any man this subject. The great subject now is the commandments of God. I was referred to Isaiah, chapters 48, 51, 52, 58 and 60. These chapters should stir the souls of the people. Carry these things in your mind, and seek the Lord and work the works so essential to be done. But give not yourselves into the hands of the enemy, for you have not that spiritual strength that you need.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

Ms 66, 1910

25LtMs, Ms 66, 1910, par. 2

Let us gird on the armor, and let there be no delay in the Lord’s work because of a lack of means. Our workers are to turn their attention to the cities, and our lay members who have means must remember that upon them rests the responsibility of helping to do this work without delay. Brethren, sisters, reconsecrate yourselves now. For the past twenty years messages have been coming to us as a people, pointing out the need of proclaiming the message throughout the world. By brethren and sisters, will you now do your appointed work, that you may be in harmony with the Lord God and with Christ, His only begotten Son. I beg of our people to resist the temptation that Satan offers them to enter into commercial enterprises and to invest their means in the Lord’s work. This Satan is trying to lead men and women to do. The 48th, 49th, 50th, 51st, and 52nd chapters of Isaiah were presented to me as showing the work that is to be done. Study, study these chapters. Carefully read and study them, and ask the Lord for a willingness to do His bidding.

Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 19 (1904)

Ms 44, 1904

19LtMs, Ms 44, 1904, par. 5

All who search the Scriptures with humility of heart will be taught of God. “Hear ye this, O house of Jacob, which are called by the name of Israel, and are come forth of the waters of Judah, which swear by the name of the Lord, and make mention of the God of Israel, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. For they call themselves [of] the holy city, and stay themselves upon the God of Israel; the Lord of hosts is His name. I have declared the former things from the beginning; and they went forth out of my mouth; and I showed them; I did them suddenly, and they came to pass.” [Isaiah 48:1-3.]

19LtMs, Ms 44, 1904, par. 6

Read the whole of this chapter—the forty-eighth of Isaiah. It has been pointed out to me as a representation of the true condition of those who, though they have had the truth line upon line, precept upon precept, have refused to hear and receive the testimonies of warning that God has given. They have hindered the work and cause of God with representation, falsehood, and heresy, and when the Spirit of God has spoken, they have said, “It is naught, it is naught.” [Proverbs 20:14.]

19LtMs, Ms 44, 1904, par. 7

“Because I knew that thou art obstinate, and thy neck is an iron sinew, and thy brow brass; I have even from the beginning declared it to thee; lest thou shouldest say, Mine idol hath done them, and my graven image, and my molten image hath commanded them. Thou hast heard, see all this; and will ye not declare it? I have showed thee new things from this time, even hidden things, and thou didst not know them. ... Yea, thou heardest not; yea, thou knewest not; yea, from that time that thine ear was not opened, for I knew that thou wouldst deal very treacherously.” [Isaiah 48:4-6, 8.]

19LtMs, Ms 44, 1904, par. 8

“For My name’s sake will I defer Mine anger, for My praise will I refrain for thee, that I cut thee not off. ... For Mine own sake, even for Mine own, will I do it; for how should My name be polluted? And I will not give My glory to another. Hearken unto Me, O Jacob and Israel, My called; I am He; I am the first, I also am the last.” [Verses 9, 11, 12.]

God presents before us two classes. For the one—the wicked—He says, “There is no peace” [Isaiah 48:22]. Of the other, “Great peace have they that love thy law: and nothing shall offend them” [Psalm 119:165]. Of that law He says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward” [Psalm 19:7-11]. We should deem our service for God a pleasure, and should make it the expression of our love for Him.

God presents before us two classes. For the one, the wicked, He says, “There is no peace.” [Isaiah 48:22.] Of the other, “Great peace have they that love thy law, and nothing can offend them.” [Psalm 119:165.] Of that law he says, “The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever; the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold; sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.” [Psalm 19:7-11.] We should deem our service for God a pleasure, and should make it the expression of our love for Him.
