A self-sufficiency has come in a sort of unsanctified independence that God cannot endorse. Learn of me, said the great Teacher, wear my yoke; for I am meek and lowly of heart, and ye shall find rest to your souls. I was referred to Isaiah 41:1-14, 17. “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them. I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers in high places, and fountains in the midst of the valleys. I will make the wilderness pools of water, and the dry land springs of water. I will plant in the wilderness the cedar and the shittah tree, and the myrtle and the oil tree; I will set in the desert the fir tree, and the pine, and the box tree together” [Verses 20-22].Isaiah 41:1-29

In the forty-first to the forty-fifth chapters of Isaiah, God very fully reveals His purpose for His people; and these chapters should be prayerfully studied. God does not here instruct His people to turn away from Him and look to finite man for wisdom. (Isaiah 44:21-23; 45:21-25)Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 22 (1907)

In the schools they establish, the world is having ideas of what means the so-called higher education. But the time will really reveal their disregard of truth and righteousness. Terrible scenes were laid out before me of what would be for Lucifer, the fallen angel. He is warring against God and all who will exalt the Lord, and he will do his best to cause calamities. Read this chapter 40 of Isaiah. This is a declaration from the Lord. Read also Isaiah 41. These are chapters full of promises. Chapter 42. Take all the encouragement possible, for the word of the Lord will certainly be fulfilled. Chapter 43. What words are in these chapters? Read them. I cannot copy them, for I have not time, but take your Bible and read chapters of this order of assurance; precious, precious are all these chapters. If you will in these latter days fulfill them, you will place yourselves where the Lord will surely do all He has promised. But although Lucifer is acting his part as a mighty deceiver, so that he will take many from our ranks and unite them to be deceived, this should not discourage us. Can we be surprised?Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 24 (1909)

For a few days I have been suffering greatly with pain in my left eye, and at first I thought it impossible to write this letter to you. I have been afflicted also with influenza; but in spite of this, I have kept at work. My pen has been in my hand much of my waking hours. Last night before retiring I took a warm footbath, and spent a comfortable night; but my mind was burdened for hours. In my sleep I seemed to be speaking before large congregations in Oakland and other places. I was reading to them the words found in the fortieth and forty-first chapters of Isaiah, and dwelling upon their significance. The Spirit of the Lord seemed to come upon me in large measure. I knew that holy angels were in the meeting. Although some in the congregation seemed to be indifferent to the words spoken, there were others who were making an effort to be free in Christ. The faces of these were lighted up. The Lord was in our midst.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 25 (1910 - 1915)

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is none else. I have sworn by myself, the word is gone out of my mouth in righteousness, and shall not return, That unto me every knee shall bow, every tongue shall swear. Surely, shall one say, In the Lord have I righteousness and strength: even to him shall men come; and all that are incensed against him shall be ashamed. In the Lord shall all the seed of Israel be justified, and shall glory.” [Isaiah 45:21-25.] Isaiah 45. Read this entire chapter, and see if you have learned the lessons God has given you. Let every teacher and student examine himself as he reads. Read also chapters 40, 41, 42, 43, 44, 45. God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

A more marked, decided work than has been done must be done prior to the second appearing of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. The gospel is to be given to all nations, tongues, and peoples. Read the whole of the forty-first chapter of Isaiah. A work is to be done in these last days to prepare the way for the second appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord gave men minds in order that He might control them. But Satan has come in with a determination to control the minds of men. Through his devising he has led men into intemperance of every description, into pleasure-loving, into liquor-drinking, into the use of the narcotic tobacco, of opium, and all other drugs which weaken the hold of the human family upon life. These are the great and most common causes of intemperance.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

The work of presenting the warning message to our world is a great and solemn work. The world has a right to know why we believe as we do. The clouds and darkness that sometimes enshrouded the pathway of my husband were not to evidence the displeasure of God. He must look up through the dark shadow that Satan casts before his pathway to eclipse the view of Jesus, that he shall not look upon His precious, gracious, forgiving image and see His glory. The words of Jesus to him are: “Look and live.” [Numbers 21:8.] “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5. I heard His voice, saying, “Fear not, neither be dismayed.” Deuteronomy 31:8. “I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee (by My free Spirit); yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of My righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10. “I pledge My word, I will be to thee a present help in every time of need, if My servant will only trust in Me and cleave to Me and resign himself into My hands. There is much to hold you, my sister, in a position of inaction. The natural feelings of the carnal heart would withdraw us from spiritual duties. Friends and relatives who have no interest in the things which make for their peace will claim our time, and often the things of the kingdom of God are repulsive to them. The attractions of this life—relatives, friends, and children—all withdraw our affections from Him who has shown us greater love than [all of them] in that He died for us. Outward difficulties may loom up like a lion in the way, and the slothful, timid heart may shrink with fear. But while we know that we cannot enter the Christian course with vigor and courage unless we are sure of effectual aid, we need not be discouraged. We have express and positive assurance that God will be with us. “Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yes, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Isaiah 41:10. “Let him take hold of my strength, saith God, and make peace with me; and he shall make peace with me.” Isaiah 27:5. “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Hebrews 13:5. Our medical missionary work is to be to the third angel’s message as the right hand to the body. Our sanitariums are one great means of doing medical missionary work. They are to reach the people where they are. The workers in our sanitariums are to be sympathetic, kind, and straightforward in their dealings with one another and with the patients. Their words and acts are to be noble and upright. They are ever to receive from Christ light and grace to impart to those in darkness. By their efforts the sick, the sinful, the prodigals, who have left the Father’s house, are to be encouraged to return. God’s words to these workers are, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end.” [Matthew 28:20.] “Fear not, neither be discouraged; for I am thy God.” [See Isaiah 41:10.]Our Father Cares

And the Holy Spirit through the prophet Isaiah declares: “To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto Him? ... Have ye not known? have ye not heard? hath it not been told you from the beginning? have ye not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is He that sitteth upon the circle of the earth, and the inhabitants thereof are as grasshoppers; that stretcheth out the heavens as a curtain, and spreadeth them out as a tent to dwell in.... To whom then will ye liken Me, or shall I be equal? saith the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high, and behold who hath created these things, that bringeth out their host by number: He calleth them all by names by the greatness of His might, for that He is strong in power; not one faileth. Why sayest thou, O Jacob, and speakest, O Israel, My way is hid from the Lord, and my judgment is passed over from my God? Hast thou not known? hast thou not heard, that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not, neither is weary? ... When, individually, as God’s entrusted agents, you make use of the fresh bright ideas given you of the truth, the same Spirit that conveyed them to you will increase your wisdom and enrich your mind with still brighter thoughts. The more you impart, the more you will have to give. As you pray, contemplating the plan of redemption you will have strength given you to overcome the objections presented by the enemy of truth. Jesus says, “I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not, I will help thee. ... yea I will strengthen thee, yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” [Isaiah 41:13, 10.] When you are fearful, when you are trembling with anxiety over the difficulties which appear to be in the way, He is beside you. The tobacco habit beclouds so many minds. Why do you not give up this habit? Why not arise and say, I will serve sin and the devil no longer? Say, I will let alone this poisonous narcotic. You never can do it in your own strength. Christ says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] There are places where card-playing is carried on. Here the Son comes into our world to practice self-denial, and although His own nation did not receive Him, He was the infinite Son of God. He was working for the uplifting of the human race. How much does God value man? I point you to Calvary. [The] most ignominious death my Lord suffered that He might rescue you, yet He does not force any of you to serve Him. He does not force the will or conscience of any soul. God has given Jesus to our world, and He wants us to search the Scriptures. He can put His Holy Spirit upon us, and He says, “I am at thy right hand to uphold thee”—to walk with our hand in the hand of Jesus Christ. [Isaiah 41:13.] To love Him and to glorify Him. His love is without a parallel. No comparison can be made to that love. He was one with the Father and was suffered to die for us. Be not surprised if your brethren look upon you with suspicion and criticize you. How cowardly have you been over these things in the past, but do not, oh, do not falter now. Press forward and onward from victory to victory. When you have become discouraged because your efforts were not appreciated, you only strengthened the evil-surmisers. You grieved the heart of Christ who loves you, who has said, “I am at your right hand to help you.” [Isaiah 41:13.] Christ is right by your side, and you allowed the hellish shadow of Satan to interpose between your soul and God. Now, Satan is not dead, neither is he asleep; he will watch to see how he can turn you from your loyalty to God. But God is looking on. Jesus is not in Joseph’s tomb and a great stone rolled before the entrance. He lives to make intercession for the souls who need Him.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 9 (1894)

You need not study to have eloquence in your prayers; you need not study to have it all framed in set words and have a long prayer. No. You can come with a broken heart and with a contrite spirit, and you can tell Jesus all about it. And then what does He say? “If ye being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” [Luke 11:13.] Is not that promise good for anything to you? That God who walked with Enoch was our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He was the light of the world then, just as He is in 1895. Those living then were not without teachers to instruct them in the paths of life, for Noah and Enoch were Christians. The gospel is given in precept in Leviticus. Implicit obedience is required now, as then. How important it is that we understand the meaning of this word. Only two classes will be developed in the world—the obedient and the disobedient. This must be made apparent in all our labors. If we could only bear in mind that Christ, in disguise, is constantly by our side. “I am at your right hand to help you.” [Isaiah 41:13.] We are to be His witnesses to convince the sinner of sin. No one can be compelled against his will, but he can be convinced. Christ is the miracle-working power that can do this.Counsels on Health

We accept too low a standard of spirituality. If we would grasp the hand of infinite power, we would reach a much higher standard. Christ says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] What more could we in our weakness desire? Shall we go to one another with all our troubles, telling human beings the temptations we have and how weak we are? The Saviour is standing at our right hand, offering to lift us up, that we may “sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” [Ephesians 2:6.] But so often we turn away from Him and His promises, and tell our troubles to those who, like ourselves, are but mortal, with troubles which only Christ can bear.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

I want you to remember that you are not your own, that you have been bought with a price, even the precious blood of the Son of God. God has shown me that your wisdom is foolishness in His sight unless you will consent to let Him sanctify and ennoble you,—body, soul, and spirit. It is your privilege to make Christ your constant companion. He says, “Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] He offers to walk with His children. He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] What companionship is this, so refreshing, so soothing, so instructive! What can give such joy as following Christ and listening to His words? He gave His life for us. He is ever ready to strengthen and bless us. He gives us help in temptation and courage in difficulty. His grace braces us for duty. He is made unto us wisdom and righteousness and sanctification and redemption. “If ye love me, keep my commandments. And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever.” [Verses 15, 16.] That Comforter is with us today. Letters come to me in which the writers ask me to pray for them. But Christ is praying for them. All they need is to carry their soul-distress to Jesus. He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] This is what I try to write to them. I tell them not to go to any human being for the help that Christ alone can give. He says, “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart, and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my Yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” [Matthew 11:28-30.] These words are spoken to you. When you fall into perplexity, read this promise, and talk with God. Tell Him about your troubles and difficulties. He will never tell you that you are foolish for not understanding better. I cannot tell you how many letters came to me across the broad Pacific, when I was in Australia, asking for counsel. What did Christ promise His disciples if they would believe in Him as their personal Saviour? “Lo, I am with you alway,” He said, “even unto the end of the world.” [Matthew 28:20.] Again, He says, “I am at thy right hand to help thee.” [See Isaiah 41:13.] Think of how many promises He has given us, which we may grasp by the hand of faith. When we go to the Source of power, we know that we shall receive that intelligence and wisdom which comes from a pure source, which is not mixed with anything of humanity. As we pray, it is our privilege to know that God wants us to pray, to ask Him for help. “Ask, and ye shall receive.” [John 16:24.] It is for you to believe that you will receive. He wants us to become acquainted with Him, to speak to Him, to tell Him of our difficulties, and obtain an experience in asking of One who never misjudges and never makes a mistake.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 17 (1902)

We are offered an everlasting life insurance policy that assures us a life which measures with the life of the infinite God. We are to make manifest that we are not working for earthly riches and honor, but for a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. When we have been offered so much, shall we not with every power of the being strive to be overcomers? If such an effort made men and women miserable, if it caused them to feel that they were under condemnation, we could not appeal so strongly to you to take up the cross and follow the Saviour. But we know that the effort to run with patience the race set before you will bring happiness into your face, the sparkle of glad satisfaction into your eyes, and nobility into your soul. In this light look at the Christian’s race. Grasp the hand of the Infinite reached down to save you. He says, “I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” [Isaiah 41:13.] Remember that in God you have a mighty Helper.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

Consider these words, ye complaining, downcast, discontented, homesick souls. Here is the prescription that the prophet Isaiah [was] commanded of the Lord to present to you for the healing of the spiritual and bodily maladies. “Then shalt thou call, and the Lord shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am.” [Verse 9.] I am “thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel.” [Isaiah 41:14.] “If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;” (not exalting yourself, not thinking yourself very wise and prudent, while censuring and oppressing those who meet with trials and misfortunes; not grieving others by unfeeling, reproachful words and actions); “And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday.” Oh, how many souls are starving for words of tenderness, for words of brotherly kindness, for words of hope, of faith, of forgiveness, of Christlike love, that will not quench the last spark of hope. “And the Lord shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.” [Isaiah 58:9-11.]Isaiah 41:17

The people of God will not be free from suffering; but while persecuted and distressed, while they endure privation and suffer for want of food they will not be left to perish. Chapter 37—The Smitten Rock
PP 413.2
Isaiah describes Him as the “rock of ages,” and “the shadow of a great rock in a weary land.” Isaiah 26:4 (margin); 32:2. And he records the precious promise, bringing vividly to mind the living stream that flowed for Israel: “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them.” “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground;” “in the wilderness shall waters break out, and streams in the desert.” The invitation is given, “Ho, every one that thirsteth, come ye to the waters.” Isaiah 41:17; 44:3; 35:6; 55:1. And in the closing pages of the Sacred Word this invitation is echoed. The river of the water of life, “clear as crystal,” proceeds from the throne of God and the Lamb; and the gracious call is ringing down through the ages, “Whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” Revelation 22:17.Reflecting Christ

God has poured out His love unstintedly, as the showers that refresh the earth. He says, “Let the skies pour down righteousness: let the earth open, and let them bring forth salvation, and let righteousness spring up together.” “When the poor and needy seek water, and there is none, and their tongue faileth for thirst, I the Lord will hear them, I the God of Israel will not forsake them. Christ has opened a fountain for the sinful, suffering world, and the voice of divine mercy is heard: “Come, all ye thirsting souls; come and drink.” You may take of the water of life freely. Let him that heareth say, Come; and whosoever will, let him come. Let every soul, women as well as men, sound this message. Then the work will be carried to the waste places of the earth. The scripture will be fulfilled: In that day the Lord shall open fountains in the valleys, and “rivers in the desert,” and “with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation.” Isaiah 41:18; 43:19, 20; 12:3.That I May Know Him

God calls for fishers of men. He calls for earnest workers, those who will be fishers of men. When the prophet Isaiah would describe the abundant blessings that would follow the abandonment of idolatry and the return of Israel to their loyalty to God, he says, “In that day the Lord shall open fountains in the valleys, and living springs in the deserts; and with joy the people shall draw water out of the wells of salvation.” [See Isaiah 41:18; 43:19, 20; 12:3.] Living streams will open to refresh all who are thirsting for the water of life.Isaiah 41:18-20

And I saw another field full of all kinds of flowers, and as I plucked them, I cried out, well they will never fade. Next I saw a field of tall grass, most glorious to behold; it was living green, and had a reflection of silver and gold, as it waved proudly to the glory of King Jesus. Then we entered a field full of all kinds of beasts—the lion, the lamb, the leopard and the wolf, altogether in perfect union; [Isaiah 11:6-9.] we passed through the midst of them, and they followed on peaceably after. Then we entered a wood, not like the dark woods we have here, no, no; but light, and all over glorious; the branches of the trees waved to and fro, and we all cried out, “we will dwell safely in the wilderness and sleep in this woods.” [Ezekiel 34:25.] We passed through the woods, for we were on our way to Mount Zion. As we were travelling along, we met a company who were also gazing at the glories of the place. I noticed red as a border on their garments; their crowns were brilliant; their robes were pure white. As we greeted them, I asked Jesus who they were? He said they were martyrs that had been slain for him. With them was an innumerable company of little ones; they had a hem of red on their garments also. [Jeremiah 31:15-17. Matthew 2:18.] Mount Zion was just before us, and on the Mount sat a glorious temple, and about it were seven other mountains, on which grew roses and lilies, [2 Esdras 2:19.] and I saw the little ones climb, or if they chose, use their little wings and fly to the top of the mountains, and pluck the never fading flowers. There were all kinds of trees around the temple to beautify the place; the box, the pine, the fir. the oil, the myrtle, the pomegranate, and the fig tree bowed down with the weight of its timely figs, that made the place look all over glorious. [Isaiah 60:13. Isaiah 41:19.] And as we were about to enter the holy temple, Jesus raised his lovely voice and said, only the 144,000 enter this place, and we shouted Hallelujah.Isaiah 41:22-24

One of the features that distinguish the true God from all false gods, is the power to communicate with men regarding the past and the future. Through the prophet Isaiah, Jehovah issues a challenge to the Gods worshiped by the heathen: “Let them show the former things, what they be, that we may consider them, and know the latter end of them; or declare us things for to come. Show the things that are to come hereafter, that we may know that ye are Gods.” And because of the inability of these false gods to do this, Jehovah declares, “Behold, ye are of nothing, and your work of nought; an abomination is he that chooseth you.” Isaiah 41:22-24.EGW Writings — Ellen G. “Keep silence before me, O islands; and let the people renew their strength; let them come near; let us come near together to judgment. Who raised up the righteous man from the east, and called him to his foot, gave the nations before him, and made him ruler over kings? Who gave them as the dust to his sword, and as driven stubble to his bow? He pursued them, and passed safely; even by the way that he had not gone with his feet. Who hath wrought and done it, calling the generation from the beginning? I the Lord, the first, and the last; I am he. But thou, Israel, art my servant, Jacob whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, my friends. Thou whom thou hast taken from the ends of the earth, and called thee from the chief men thereof, and said unto thee, Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee. Fear not, thou worm Jacob, and ye men of Israel; I will help thee, saith the Lord, and thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel. Behold, I will make thee a new sharp thrashing instrument having teeth: thou shalt thrash the mountains, and beat them small, and shalt make the hills as chaff.
