No man can accept the gospel of Christ who refuses the admonitions of the Word of God, and follows a way of his own choosing. “Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, that they may add sin to sin. That walk to go down into Egypt, and that have not asked at my mouth, to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.” [Isaiah 30:1-3.] Will there be among the people of God in these last days those who pursue a course of action similar to that of rebellious Israel? Will those who have had privileges and opportunities, and before whom the Lord has worked in a marked manner, oppose righteousness? Shall there be among us those described by the prophet as “rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord, which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophesy deceits. Get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us”? [Verses 9-11.]Isaiah 30:1-15

The warnings given in the Word of God to the children of Israel were meant, not merely for them, but for all who should live upon the earth. He says to them, “Woe to the rebellious children, ... that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin; that walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt.” [Isaiah 30:1, 2.] If the Lord reproved His people anciently because they neglected to seek counsel of Him when in difficulty, will He not be displeased today if His people, instead of depending on the bright beams of the Sun of Righteousness to lighten their way, turn from Him in their test and trial for aid to human beings who are as erring and inefficient as themselves? Where is our strength? Is it in men who are as helpless, as dependent, as ourselves; who need guidance from God as we do?11LtMs, Lt 77, 1896, par. 29
“Now go, write it before them in a table, and note it in a book, that it may be for the time to come for ever and ever: That this is a rebellious people, lying children, children that will not hear the law of the Lord, which say to the seers, See not; and to the prophets, Prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things, prophecy deceits; get you out of the way, turn aside out of the path, cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us. Wherefore thus saith the Holy One of Israel, Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression and perverseness, and stay thereon; therefore this iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.” [Isaiah 30:8-13.]11LtMs, Lt 77, 1896, par. 32
“Thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength; and ye would not.” [Isaiah 30:15.] “And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness. The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. For the terrible one is brought to naught, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off; that make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, to turn aside the just for a thing of naught. Therefore, thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel. They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.” [Isaiah 29:18-24.]Isaiah 30:1-16

How can I present before you these facts that are eternal truths? Here you can say, “In my hands no price I bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling.” If your prayers—yes, your prayers, feeble as they may seem—are sincere, if they are mixed with faith, then you may know that Jesus liveth to make intercession for you. The persevering, sincere seeker will surely be the finder, for as soon as you approach the mercy seat in faith, then Christ regards you as His client. He espouses your cause; He makes it His own. He is standing before the Father, your Substitute, your Surety. When you seek the Lord with all your heart, “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15.1888 878.1
Isaiah 29:9-24 and 30:1-15 should be considered. I am sorrowfully compelled to say this word of the Lord will be fulfilled to all men who claim to be teachers and yet will in the future have acted out this chapter in principles, greatly blinded their eyes that they should not see, and greatly weakened the work of the Lord and dishonored the truth of heavenly origin.1888 878.2

The chapters we were reading in course were in Isaiah. He read with us, and the very portions of Scripture which specified his sin was read by himself. We thought we would give him every chance to make the application to his own case and this might awaken in him a remorse, but it did not seem to have the least influence. He did that night—after we labored with him a long while and then left him with Brother Rousseau and Brother Prescott—confess his sins of vileness, and the conditions were plainly stated, if he would break away at once, and return to New Zealand, we would furnish him money. But he said positively he would not go to New Zealand.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 13 (1898)

God chooses His workers from all classes of people, and imbues them with His own spirit. So it was in ancient times. The men and women of God’s selection were of intense earnestness, full of zeal. The last books of the Old Testament show us workers taken from the laborers in the field. Others were men of high ability and extensive learning, but the Lord gave them visions and messages. These men of the Old Testament spoke of the things transpiring in their day, and Daniel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel not only spoke of things that concerned them as present truth, but their sight reached down to the future, and to what should occur in these last days.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

It may be said of a large proportion who know the truth that “their strength is to sit still.” [Isaiah 30:7.] We must sow beside all waters, not knowing which shall prosper, this or that. We must expect God will work. We must pray much, and if the enemies of truth close up the way, we must not fail. We must not talk hopelessly and discouragingly; but go to work in some other place, for this is the way the Master of the house used to do.Isaiah 30:8-13

Their effort is to turn the true messenger of God from the path of duty, and silence the voice of warning, while they, professing godliness, shall mingle with the world in spirit and practice, and at the same time be honored as Christian leaders. But to keep the fear and honor and judgment of God before them fills them with hatred. They do not want to bear His holy character, His hatred for sin, for they practice dishonesty. They cry, “Prophesy smooth things, talk of the love of Jesus. Do not keep before us the justice of God.” A “Thus saith the Lord” gives great displeasure to their proud, worldly, reprobate minds. They despise the words the Lord sends them, and are resolved to pursue the way which seems right to them, to trust in oppression, deceit, and perversity. Therefore their iniquity shall be to them “as a breach ready to fall, swelling out in a high wall, whose breaking cometh suddenly at an instant.” [Verse 13.]The Ellen G. White 1888 Materials

Will Brother Henry consider what kind of spirit they have cherished in reference to the message and the messengers. How bitter were your feelings against them. Do you think that God was leading you? These feelings are waiting for a revival. If in the history of the men who have borne this gospel message, anything should take place which should prove them erring, fallible as yourselves, you would not consider your own errors and mistakes; you would manifest the most bitter feelings against them. It is high time you were thoroughly converted, that your sins may go beforehand, and be blotted out now in probationary time, lest it shall be forever too late for wrongs to be righted. False prophets do not exalt Christ. They rather draw attention to themselves. “Speaking perverse things,” they “draw away disciples” after themselves. Acts 20:30. To accomplish this, they teach in a manner to please the carnal mind of those who in their hearts “say to the seers, see not; and to the prophets, prophesy not unto us right things, speak unto us smooth things.” Isaiah 30:10. These alleged prophets or teachers are “of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.” 1 John 4:5.Testimony Treasures, vol. 1

Thus are revealed the snares and devices of Satan, the importance of perfecting Christian character, and the means by which this result may be obtained. Thus God indicates what is necessary to secure His blessing. There is a disposition on the part of many to let rebellious feelings arise if their peculiar sins are reproved. The spirit of this generation is: “Speak unto us smooth things.” Isaiah 30:10. But the spirit of prophecy speaks only the truth. Iniquity abounds, and the love of many who profess to follow Christ waxes cold. They are blind to the wickedness of their own hearts and do not feel their weak and helpless condition. God in mercy lifts the veil and shows them that there is an eye behind the scenes that discerns their hidden guilt and the motives of their actions. From Here to Forever

The people accuse one another of having led them to destruction, but all unite in heaping their bitterest condemnation upon the unfaithful pastors who prophesied “smooth things” (Isaiah 30:10), who led their hearers to make void the law of God and persecute those who would keep it holy. “We are lost!” they cry, “and you are the cause.” The hands that once crowned them with laurels will be raised for their destruction. Many who have known the truth, but who have not cherished its principles in their hearts, will become leavened with evil. This evil they do not discern. In word and act they say, “Speak unto us smooth things; prophesy deceits.” [Isaiah 30:10.] We are now to call things by their right name. No longer are we to look upon unrighteousness as righteousness. Let every one now be prepared to lift up the standard of truth. We are to have no fellowship with the worldly practices that have perverted the faith of some who have enjoyed great privileges and who should now be standing on vantage ground.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Chapter 1—The Destruction of Jerusalem
GC 28.1
The long-suffering of God toward Jerusalem only confirmed the Jews in their stubborn impenitence. In their hatred and cruelty toward the disciples of Jesus they rejected the last offer of mercy. Then God withdrew His protection from them and removed His restraining power from Satan and his angels, and the nation was left to the control of the leader she had chosen. Her children had spurned the grace of Christ, which would have enabled them to subdue their evil impulses, and now these became the conquerors. Satan aroused the fiercest and most debased passions of the soul. Men did not reason; they were beyond reason—controlled by impulse and blind rage. They became satanic in their cruelty. In the family and in the nation, among the highest and the lowest classes alike, there was suspicion, envy, hatred, strife, rebellion, murder. There was no safety anywhere. Friends and kindred betrayed one another. Parents slew their children, and children their parents. The rulers of the people had no power to rule themselves. Uncontrolled passions made them tyrants. The Jews had accepted false testimony to condemn the innocent Son of God. Now false accusations made their own lives uncertain. By their actions they had long been saying: “Cause the Holy One of Israel to cease from before us.” Isaiah 30:11. Now their desire was granted. The fear of God no longer disturbed them. Satan was at the head of the nation, and the highest civil and religious authorities were under his sway. The Great Controversy (1888 ed.)

Patiently wait, watch and pray, and hold fast to the promises. However much your enemies have bruised and wounded your soul, forgive them, and by maintaining faith in Christ, you will find Him to be to you as the shadow of a great Rock in a weary land. “In quietness and confidence (in Him whom you believe) shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] Be vigilant to resist everything that would mar the simplicity of your faith. The divine instruction to us is, “Commit thy way unto the Lord, trust also in him, and he shall bring it to pass.” “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him.” [Psalm 37:5, 7.] This is my attitude now. Here is my faith, to stand here <still,> and see the salvation of God. I do not want to wrestle my way out of the hands of Christ. “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] I am indeed in great perplexity; I must not dishonor Jesus, I must watch, must pray, must believe. The time of uncertainty and trial is no time for me to be in a hurry and want to deliver myself. Those who see that loyalty to God will bring about division in the family circle are represented by the man in the parable who said, “I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come.” [Luke 14:20.] The supposition that refusing to obey God will bring peace and prosperity to the home, is a delusion of the enemy. Those who sow selfishness will reap selfishness. Christ has sent out an invitation to the gospel feast to all the world. The worst of sinners may share in his abundant salvation. He has made every provision whereby to satisfy the hunger and thirst of the soul; but if those who are invited, refuse to co-operate with God, and if they turn from their Lord and Master, who gave his life in order that they might be blessed in being turned from their iniquities, what is there left for them but to reap the natural results of their sin? They say, It is a vain thing to serve God, and are therefore filled with the fruits of their own doings. They educate themselves to wage controversy with God. They sow to the flesh, and will reap of the flesh corruption. Sowing to the flesh is anything that is opposed to meekness, lowliness, the love of God that is shown by the fulfilling of his law. He who walks after the Spirit does not trust in his own good works nor in himself, but in the Lord Jesus Christ, the divine protection. “In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 12 (1897)

“In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] Take this with you throughout the year. The strength of every soul is in God and not in man. Quietness and confidence is to be the strength of all who give their hearts to God. Christ has not a casual interest in us but an interest stronger than a mother for her child. Says the prophet, “Can a woman forget her sucking child? ... yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.” [Isaiah 49:15.] Our Saviour has purchased us by human suffering and sorrow, by insult, reproach, abuse, mockery, rejection, and death. He is watching over you, trembling child of God. He will make you secure under His protection. Through His servant He says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.” [Isaiah 26:3.] “Wait on the Lord: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the Lord.” “They that wait on the Lord shall be as Mount Zion, which cannot be moved, but abideth forever.” [Psalm 27:14; 125:1.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The church should stand in partnership with Christ, in a firm brotherhood in which God and man have a part to act. Many church members are blind in their understanding of matters which concern their personal accountability to God. “In returning and rest shall ye be saved,” God declares, “in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] Many who profess religion have not the genuine article. There is not revealed in their lives the fruits of a genuine conversion. The same old habits, the same jealousies and evil surmisings and evil speaking, the same faultfinding and criticism, and selfishness and covetousness, is seen. With such attributes, how can the church prosper? The Holy Spirit is ever working to bring the human agencies in harmony with God. Without genuine conversion, not one soul will enter the city of the King of glory.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

God desires all who are connected with the sick in our institutions to have in their hearts the peace of Christ. Their words and works are to be such that they will shine as lights in the world. “In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.] “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him; fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; fret not thyself in any wise to do evil. ... The meek shall inherit the earth; and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace. ... The mouth of the righteous speaketh wisdom, and his tongue talketh of judgment. The law of his God is in his heart; none of his steps shall slide.” [Psalm 37:7, 8, 11, 30, 31.] This is the instruction that should be given to those working in our sanitariums. Our High Calling

Be hopeful. Knowing that Jesus loves you, you can be cheerful. Keep your soul in the love of God. Sometimes we may gain strength by being kept in quietness. Action is good sometimes; but often we may receive great blessing in calm, sweet meditation and in quiet study, waiting upon God for the refreshing of His Holy Spirit. “For thus saith the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” [Isaiah 30:15.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 18 (1903)

Chapter 48—“Not by Might, nor by Power”
PK 595.3
Human power and human might did not establish the church of God, and neither can they destroy it. Not on the rock of human strength, but on Christ Jesus, the Rock of Ages, was the church founded, “and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matthew 16:18. The presence of God gives stability to His cause. “Put not your trust in princes, nor in the son of man,” is the word that comes to us. Psalm 146:3. “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15. God’s glorious work, founded on the eternal principles of right, will never come to nought. It will go on from strength to strength, “not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” Zechariah 4:6.Steps to Christ
Chapter 8—Growing Up Into Christ
SC 71.1
Jesus says, “Abide in Me.” These words convey the idea of rest, stability, confidence. Again He invites, “Come unto Me, ... and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28. The words of the psalmist express the same thought: “Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him.” And Isaiah gives the assurance, “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” Psalm 37:7; Isaiah 30:15. This rest is not found in inactivity; for in the Saviour’s invitation the promise of rest is united with the call to labor: “Take My yoke upon you: ... and ye shall find rest.” Matthew 11:29. The heart that rests most fully upon Christ will be most earnest and active in labor for Him.The Retirement Years

Many think that they must consult commentaries on the Scriptures in order to understand the meaning of the word of God, and we would not take the position that commentaries should not be studied; but it will take much discernment to discover the truth of God under the mass of the words of men. How little has been done by the church as a body professing to believe the Bible, to gather up the scattered jewels of God’s word into one perfect chain of truth? The jewels of truth do not lie upon the surface, as many suppose. The master mind in the confederacy of evil is ever at work to keep the truth out of sight, and to bring into full view the opinions of great men. The enemy is doing all in his power to obscure heaven’s light through educational processes; for he does not mean that men shall hear the voice of the Lord, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.]That I May Know Him

God is speaking to us through His Word, pointing out the path of faith and righteousness as the only path to glory. All who have the Spirit of Christ will place high value upon the Scriptures, for they are the oracles of God. They are as actually a divine communication, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it,” (Isaiah 30:21), as though its words came to us from Isaiah, syllabled and in an audible voice. Oh, if people only believed this, what awe, what reverence, what prostration of soul would attend their searching of the Scriptures which show the way to eternal life! The Scriptures are the Word of the living God to man, a message from heaven. Every true child of God will love to peruse it, to study it. And if they read it prayerfully, in humility, yet with hope and faith and confidence, it will be a lamp to their feet, a light to their path, and they will not walk in darkness. The more they search for knowledge, the clearer will truth shine; and yet they may never quit their searching, for there is an infinity still of knowledge of light and truth. You must give to the world an example in purity of principle and incorruption in your words. You must not give yourself to the practice of deception, prevaricating, misstating facts, or the least dishonesty in dealing with your fellow men, because, if you do, God marks it against you, and the world judges your doctrines by your actions. You must be firm as a rock to principle, and then you will give evidence to the world that the truth has a sanctifying power upon your heart and your character. Jesus is coming. My heart is sore and sad because you have not heeded the light you have had. You have had great light, great opportunities and privileges, in having your way so definitely marked out. A voice has been following you, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” Isaiah 30:21. Why, oh, why, have you disregarded the voice of warning and reproof? Why did you not receive the light and render to the Master earnest, sincere service? Had you been meek and lowly of heart, you could have reflected pure, steady beams of light upon the pathway of others. Those who receive the light that God graciously gives them, with a heart to obey, evidence a more than common sensibility. How long God has borne with the perversity of men! Again and again He has been disappointed in those who, while they claim to be His followers, act on impulse and, although the voice of Jesus calls to them, “This is the way, walk ye in it” [Isaiah 30:21], they take the path of their own choosing. Jesus said, “He that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” John 8:12. If you really believe the testimonies, you will not be partial in your observance of the messages, exalting one part—one portion—because it suits your own ideas and rejecting another because it fails to meet your mind and reproves a course of action that you choose to follow. This is the way in which many believe in Christ. They are hearers of His word, but not doers of them. Men show by their fruits just what faith they really have. Those who declare that they believe the words of Christ and yet do those things that please themselves, neglecting to do that which the Lord has specified, are not obedient children. Had Israel obeyed God’s Word and respected His instruction, the Lord would have accomplished His purpose through them, His moral agencies. Divine and human agencies would have walked together in companionship. God works through human agencies by the light of His Word, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] But God’s Spirit never leads to contention, strife, or alienation.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

The gospel of Christ is the source of all saving life. It is eternal life to all who believe. This is the true science of salvation. It is salvation to all troubled hearts. In faith it is your privilege to point to Jesus Christ, and cry, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.” [John 1:29.] Remember that a departure from righteousness never leads to righteousness and goodness and faith. This message, received into the heart and lived in the life, is a message from God, continually saying to other souls, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] This is our argument, our doctrine, our warning, to those who know not God or the truth. It is our encouragement to the sorrowing. It is the rich hope of all who believe, who receive Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 14 (1899)

If the youth come to school determined to obtain instruction that will fit them for the higher grade, ministering angels will attend them at every step. The still, small voice is speaking to them, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it” [Isaiah 30:21], and they must so conduct themselves that they will be susceptible to the influences of the Holy Spirit. I do not think that our brethren in America take in the situation of things here. They do not think of the many years of experience they have had, the many influences that have been brought to bear upon God’s people in America, bringing them along step by step, giving them line upon line, precept upon precept, saying at every crisis, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] The Lord calls for great patience to be exercised in this new world. Australia must be helped. The light and influence those in America have enjoyed for years they must now be willing to impart to others.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 15 (1900)

Today there are altogether too many superficial things brought in to confuse the minds of those who want the truth. Direct, simple appeals should be made, leaving unsaid the many things that might be said in man’s wisdom. Point all to the open path, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] So much hay, wood, and stubble is brought in to be laid upon the foundation. I will write no more now, but I hope you will both be situated where for a time you will not have to strain every nerve and muscle to their highest tension. It is not best to be in any way presumptuous. The Lord desires His worn servants to have a chance to be situated where they will have an opportunity to express with pen and voice the advantage of a broad experience, without sacrificing their lives in the effort. By precept and example men should be educated to bear the strain of labor, and those who have hitherto borne the burdens should preserve the life God has given them to voice His Word, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

We need to be wide-awake that we may distinguish between the true and the false. Movements will be made by religious organizations which, though apparently designed to benefit the world, are not in accordance with God’s mind. In these movements we are to take no part. Many will give them their sympathy, thereby becoming entangled. Those who take part in the Lord’s service are to be clear-sighted, experienced men, men who can be trusted, who, seeing beneath the surface, will lift the voice in warning, saying, “Beware of false paths. This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] Many will agree to half-concealed plans, and will find themselves working on the enemy’s side.Gospel Workers (1892/1893 ed.)

There are deep mysteries in the word of God, which will never be discovered by minds that are unaided by the Spirit of God. There are also unsearchable mysteries in the plan of redemption, which finite minds can never comprehend. Inexperienced youth might better tax their minds and exercise their ability to gain an understanding of matters that are revealed; for unless they possess more spiritual enlightenment than they now have, it would take a lifetime to learn the revealed will of God. When they have cherished the light they already have, and made a practical use of it, they will be able to take a step forward. God’s providence is a continual school, in which he is ever leading men to see the true aims of life. None are too young, and none too old, to learn in this school, by paying diligent heed to the lessons taught by the Divine Teacher. He is the True Shepherd, and he calls his sheep by name. By the wanderers his voice is heard, saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 16 (1901)

The road leading heavenward is straight and narrow. For this reason many choose the wide road of the world. In it they find room for self-gratification. They pick up by the way those things which please temporarily, casting longing glances at the attractions which the world holds out. They refuse to hear Him who, desiring to save them from death, points to the strait gate and the narrow path, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] O, how many there are who say, “What need is there to hurry? Sometime in the future I will make a decided change.” There is a positive dislike to turn from selfishness. God must show us every step of the way. Every hour we must have the new impulses of His Spirit. Love for Him should be the mainspring of our actions. Every hour has its duties and every movement its cares. Let a controlling power from above check the hasty speech. Let your heart be filled with the kindest, most tender compassion. Never allow yourself to be ruled by impulse. Never get out of patience. New scenes are opening before us, and we need to hear a voice from heaven, directing us to the right or to the left, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] God’s will, not ours, is to control. “A man’s heart deviseth his way; but the Lord directeth his steps.” [Proverbs 16:9.]Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 20 (1905)

My mind is sad beyond expression because the enemy has obtained victories over the minds and hearts and wills of those whom the Lord has been admonishing, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] God has been warning them for years, but they would not receive His words and take heed to them; they would not make their works perfect before Him. Some of those who claim to have been teaching the truth present before God a very ragged practice, which He does not accept. They determined to follow their own will and way, and they have been led by the enemy of all righteousness. Satan has been playing the game of life for their souls and has been stealing away from them the Lord’s entrusted gifts, putting in their place his evil sentiments to be worked out in scientific problems. He has blinded the spiritual eyesight, and deceptive, delusive imaginings are taking the place of the Word of life and truth. Some in exalted positions of responsibility are sustaining error in the place of truth. Satan makes his delusions most attractive, clothing error in the garments of truth, so that it seems the most desirable thing to possess. The minds of many whom we would naturally suppose would see things clearly are blinded as with a bewitching sophistry of error. If the terribly bewitching, fascinating story is not interrupted, those who are listening to it will become infidels in their belief. There is no safety in their present experience. They need to be convicted and converted by eating the Word of God, believing it just as it reads, interpreting it correctly, not weaving the messages sent by God to save His people into their own sophistries, making them speak in favor of fables that undermine the foundation established by the Lord for His commandment-keeping people.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 21 (1906)

I wish all to understand that my confidence in the light that God has given stands firm, because I know that the Holy Spirit’s power magnified the truth and made it honorable, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] In my books, the truth is stated, barricaded by a “Thus saith the Lord.” The Holy Spirit traced these truths upon my heart and mind as indelibly as the law was traced by the finger of God upon the tables of stone, which are now in the ark, to be brought forth in that great day when sentence will be pronounced against every evil, seducing science produced by the father of lies.Letters and Manuscripts — Volume 23 (1908)

Every teacher needs to receive the truth in the love of its sacred principles; then he cannot fail of exerting an influence that is purifying and uplifting. The teacher whose soul the truth cleanses, refines, and ennobles, whose heart is stayed upon Christ, will speak and act like a Christian. Such an one will not be satisfied until the truth cleanses his life from every unessential thing. He will not be satisfied unless his mind is day by day being molded by the holy influences of the Spirit of God. The light of prophecy still burns for the guidance of souls, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] It shines on the pathway of the just to commend, and on the way of the unjust to lead to repentance and conversion. Through its agency sin will be rebuked and iniquity unmasked. It is progressive in the performance of its duty to reflect light on the past, the present, and the future. The light of truth, Bible truth, will sustain the workers under the great responsibilities that they are called upon to bear. The leading men in our colleges and churches need to study faithfully the highest counsel. They should make the Word their rule and guide in life. They should give heed to the “sure word of prophecy,” which is as a light shining in a dark place. [2 Peter 1:19.] That word will point out unfailingly the path of duty, saying, “This is the way; walk ye in it.” [Isaiah 30:21.] None who hold positions of trust should dare to stand off guard for one moment, for the enemy is watching vigilantly to take advantage of such occasions. God is speaking to us through His word, pointing out the path of faith and righteousness as the only path to glory. All who have the Spirit of Christ will place high value upon the Scriptures, for they are the oracles of God. They are as actually a divine communication saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it” (Isaiah 30:21), as though these words came to us from Isaiah in an audible voice. And here we are, away down in 1909. We see and sense the developments that have taken place and the necessity of urgency now in bearing the last message of warning to a guilty world. We read the New Testament history and the words of Christ in the parable of the “Great Supper.” [Luke 14:16.] The outdoor preaching and the preaching in tents in camp-meetings means more in 1910 than in 1842 and ’43 and ’44. Will we consider these things? I have been over the ground and had the experience since I was fifteen years old. I have much written in the diary I have kept in all my journeys that should come before the people if essential, even if I did not write another line. I want that which is deemed worthy to appear, for the Lord has given me much light that I want the people to have; for there is instruction that the Lord has given me for His people. It is light that they should have, line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little. This is now to come before the people, because it has been given to correct specious errors and to specify what is truth. You have had great light, great opportunities and privileges, in having your way so definitely marked out. A voice has been following you saying, “This is the way, walk ye in it” [Isaiah 30:21]. Why, oh, why, have you disregarded the voice of warning and reproof? Why did you not receive the light, and render to the Master earnest, sincere service? Had you been meek and lowly of heart, you could have reflected pure, steady beams of light upon the pathway of others. Those who receive the light that God graciously gives them, with a heart to obey, evidence a more than common sensibility. Every student that has been advised to go to Ann Arbor, to obtain the finishing touches, is learning lessons from those who know not God, but who, if the seal of God is placed in their foreheads, must themselves become learners in the school of Christ. By precept and example they are teaching the doctrines and maxims of men. They bring in many good things, but they mingle error with truth. Those who go to them for instruction open their minds to error, and the enemy cooperates with those who make void the law of God. “Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, that take counsel, but not of me; and that cover with a covering, but not of my Spirit, that they may add sin to sin: that walk to go down into Egypt, and have not asked at my mouth; to strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, and to trust in the shadow of Egypt! Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, and the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.” [Isaiah 30:1-3.]
